Offspring

Clarette screamed because Janine bit her hand, and she tried to wrench it away, tugging on the girls hair and pulling her head down to the ground, but the kid wouldn't let go of her hand. Furiously, Clarette took her head and used it as a battering ram against Janine, smashing their forehead together. Her hand was free and now Clarette was the one using her teeth, still pulling on the other girls braids. Suddenly, Janine froze mid claw. The next second, Clarette saw why. A large black panther had bound out of the trees and was growling angrily.

Janine let go immediately, and Clarette followed suit. "A friend of yours?" she asked through bared teeth as the panther stood in front of Janine, shackles raised.

"More like a babysitter." and then in an undertone, "Kira go away!" It was more embarassing to be stopped than to lose the fight.

Clarette was silent and then shrugged, "Oh whatever." she snapped, glaring at the panther. "Lauret, we're going." she said, and her voice was oddly angry. No fight?! "Now, you coward." She spat, not noticing she'd used the same adjective Janine had used.

Janine stared after her, a small frown on her face, and then glared at Yuli, "Why didn't you stop him?"

Yanine shrugged, holding Rorr up. "Sorry." She didn't sound too sorry, though. Janine rolled her eyes. "What ever."

<sub>Lauret was shocked to see a panther come running towards them, long elegant strides getting the cat here sooner than he would have thought possible. It might have been going faster than a horse and that seemed impossible if you weren't in a car! His eyes widened and Clarette and the other girl pulled away form each other, getting up. There was a tense moment still when Marie accused the girl of bringing in help but Janine said it was more of a babysitter. Lauret looked from face to face to face, scared and watching as Clarette turned and started away, telling him to come and calling him a coward. He mumbled somehting under his breath, but he followed obediantly.

["Parker!"]

Ari had flattened her hears the whole time. This whole thing was rediculous. She had scrambled back when Lauret's hair was getting pulled, and she'd almost stepped in to fight. But no. She watched Lauret start to get up and go and she heisitated then stood up-

"Bye Lauret!"

She smiled weakly, hoping that maybe the boy would remember her.

_{While Lauret walked sullenly behind his sister he heard something, turning slightly and pausing to look back. It was the friend he had made. The cat girl. Ari. He looked from the sullen faces going back to playing, then to her smiling one and he smiled back, unable to help himself. He looked to Clarette and to Ari one last time, waving goodbye. He didn't want to say anything out loud right now, just be as inconspicuous as possible. Maybe everyone would forget he ever existed. He let his hand lower, turning to catch up to the back of his sister, against being silent but having a small inward smile that even after all the trouble he had cause he had made a friend.}
