A little segway with Neil in the underworld titled 'abhorsen'
----
He was by a river. The river styx, the man to his left had said. Neil looked around at the misty air with little interest. Time was slow here, on the riverbank. He didn't know if it had been a day or a year, but that didn't interest him either way. He was interested to note that his hand was gone and that there was no pain. And he was interested to know that Belosus was sitting across from him, looking annoyed. "You're a bastard." Belosus told him quietly.
Neil shrugged, "Yeah, maybe." He felt indiferently to his old enemy, whose face was terrible. Here was his true face, which Neil was surprised to find was white.
"You killed me. And all you have to say is 'yeah maybe'." Belosus spat bitterly. Neil shrugged again.
"You were already dead, anyway. A dead spirit locked in my mind. I feel a little more...complete. Even if I'm dead."
"There's one thing I don't regret doing. Holding back certain emotions from you."
"...what?"
Belosus smiled and his eyes glittered, "I wouldn't worry about it, if I were you. What do you feel?"
"I miss my children. I miss Jamie. Even now I can feel them gathering. I almost feel like I can see them." A ghost of a smile haunted his face. "But I can't."
"Now or ever. You are unlucky. You will have to wait a hundred years before the ferry man will take you across." Belosus held up a coin and bit it with satisfaction. "But i always carry my death coin with me." Neil shrugged at him and Belosus's face contorted furiously, "ONE HUNDRED YEARS, MAGGOT! WHICH ARE BUT A SECOND OF THE TIME I HAVE SPENT PLOTTING TO GET OUT OF YOUR DECRYPT HEAD! And all ruined! Because you felt it was a good idea to kill yourself!"
"And you." Neil added with a thoughtful air.
Belosus turned purple and then looked up when the ferry man waved him over. "I'm leaving you here." he hissed, and spat at Neil's feet. Have fun waiting for death, you suicidal prick. Have fun waiting for hell."
The man left and Neil turned away from the river, which he could feel calling him already. He stared into the fog, straining his eyes. There. One of his children. Rorr? Was it Rorr? And then even clearer, Jamie. His blue eyes flashed at this. "Have they given up already? I do not seek their sacrifice!" he growled.
Neil tried to relax and closed his eyes, "Nay, children. Nay, Jamie. Come no closer to the river Styx than you must. I will wait. You should too."
